Replacing a roof Case studies

Cute bach survives worst storms

This house was built to provide post-war accommodation for refugees. In the 1960s it was moved to a swampy site north of Auckland. Over the years, loving owners re-piled, refitted, refurbished and renovated. Still struggling under a heavy concrete tile roof, by 2006 the bach was visibly sagging and sinking. When an easterly blew, the concrete tiles would occasionally lift and they were becoming harder to replace.

In 2007 the owners decided to re-roof the bach with a lightweight Gerard pressed steel roof – selecting Gerard Corona Shake in Charcoal to complement the house and its surroundings. It was an inspired decision. In July and September that year some of the worst storms in living memory ripped through Northland resulting in significant property destruction. But the little bach stayed safe and dry.

Clubhouse regains its dignity

This very special building stood proud and imposing for decades, conveying strength and character to generations of club members and visitors. Rescued from the ravages of time by a complete renovation, the clubhouse’s return to former glory was capped off by a distinguished and enduring Gerard pressed steel roof.

With strong bones and an underlying roofing structure that was built to last, the clubhouse was ideal for a Gerard re-roof overlay. Realising the opportunity to protect and enhance the clubhouse for generations to come, the project team selected Gerard Colortile in Dark Green. The outcome is a look that complements the building’s formal design and its surrounding natural environment.

Bold tile over tile creates a new star

With a lovely home that was simply getting a bit tired, these owners recognised an opportunity. Typically, a roof accounts for only 5% of the total cost of a home, but it has the potential to significantly influence its appearance and resale value. The owners decided they could play it safe and re-roof over the existing tiles with a similar colour or step out of their comfort zone to create something special that would reward them for years to come.

They chose to stand out and re-roofed tile over tile with Gerard Colortile in a satin finish and barrel trim. The colour they selected was Settlement; fresh, bright and bold, yet very much in keeping with the traditional lines of their much-loved home. For these happy owners, a straightforward but well-planned reroof has turned their home into a star of the street.

Bungalow reinvention strips away time

Once upon a time, a tidy brick bungalow sat on its lawn looking strong but tired and uninspiring. Magnificent in its day, the potential was there to create a visually appealing home that could support a more modern lifestyle. With a subtle change to the roofline, bi-fold doors and windows improved indoor-outdoor flow, exterior plaster finish and a stunning new roof, this solid home has stepped into the now, while retaining all the strength and durability of days gone by.

The predictable brick bungalow roof was stripped away and replaced with a lightweight, durable and visually stunning Gerard pressed steel roof. The solid traditional look of Gerard Corona Shake in a textured finish retains the long-lasting appeal of this home. By selecting the Charcoal roof colour with co-ordinated windows and contrasting walls, the owners have created a fresh and sophisticated look of quality. They’re understandably proud of their brand new home, reinvented from foundations to roof.
